Hybrid Division
A home with a dog and a cat: how the boxes work
Updated
A dog and cat subscription box here is two boxes, not one: you choose Dog for one and Cat for the other, because each pet gets its own. Homes with both are what we call the Hybrid Division, and each box carries its own list of proteins to skip.
What does the Hybrid Division name mean?
It is a name, and that is all it is. We call the dog side the Gas Division and the cat side the Electric Division, and a household with both is the Hybrid Division. If you drive anything with a plug and a tank, you already see where the joke came from.
What it is not matters more. The Hybrid Division is not a third box to pick, a plan, a bundle or a discount. The product has two choices, Dog and Cat, and you will see exactly those two when you order. Nothing about the name changes what is in the box, how the boxes are packed or when they arrive.
So when you read the three names on our pages, take them as labels for the kind of home you have. They do not add a button to the order form.
Why does each pet get its own box?
Because the box is built around one pet. Each order is for a single dog or a single cat, and you name the proteins to leave out for that animal. Two animals means two boxes.
On the order form you choose Dog for one box and Cat for the other. That is the whole setup. The cat box page describes what the cat side looks like, and the dog side lives on its own page.
Our treats are our own single ingredient treats, freeze dried or air dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and each month brings a new theme and a new lineup. This page makes no claim either way about whether the two boxes share any treats. Treat them as separate boxes and you will not be surprised by either.
How do you keep the dog's treats and the cat's treats apart?
With a little habit, and no special gear. A shelf or a bin for each pet is enough. Label them if you share the house with people who put things away in the wrong place.
Open one bag per pet at a time, and keep the rest closed. Hand the treats out in different spots, the dog's on the rug and the cat's wherever the cat actually sits. That way nobody learns to hover around the wrong cupboard.
We will leave the question of whether one animal may eat the other's treats alone. Ask your veterinarian about special diets for either pet, and keep to the box meant for each. All of our treats are for intermittent or supplemental feeding, which means they sit beside regular meals.
Each pet gets its own routine, even in a small kitchen.
How do skip lists work when you have both?
Each box gets its own list. Tell us the proteins to leave out when you order, and do it separately for the dog and for the cat. The cat's list belongs to the cat's box, and the dog's list belongs to the dog's.
To change a list later, contact us any time and name the pet the change is for. "The cat" or "the dog" is enough if you have only one of each. A short, clear message gets the right box updated and leaves the other one alone.
Writing the lists as two separate notes, instead of one shared one, is the easiest thing you can do for yourself. A dog and a cat may not skip the same things, and a combined note invites mix-ups.
When you are ready, the Modified Monthly page is where the order begins.
If you want more on running a box at home, the guides hub collects it in one spot.
Questions
Is there one box for a dog and a cat together?
No. Each pet gets its own box, so a home with both orders two. The choices on the form are Dog and Cat, and you pick one for each box. Hybrid Division is our name for homes like yours, not a third product.
What is the Electric Division?
It is our name for the cat side of the business, next to the Gas Division for dogs. That is all it is: a name, with no separate plan or product behind it.
Can I order a dog box and a cat box at the same time?
Yes, pick Dog for one box and Cat for the other. We do not promise the two will ship together, so plan on them as two separate boxes that may not land on the same day.
Do both boxes need their own skip list?
Yes. The proteins to leave out belong to each pet, so write one list for the dog and one for the cat. Add them when you order, and contact us any time to change either one.
What if I have two dogs and a cat?
You still order a box for each pet, so that is three boxes. Dogs in one home share a lineup, so your two dogs get the same one. We do not say the cat's box matches it. Our multiple dogs guide covers the dog side.
Can I give a dog box and a cat box as a gift?
Yes. Either box can ship to a US address other than yours, so you could send the dog box to one friend and the cat box to another, or both to the same home.
