The gift in one paragraph

The treats in Modified Monthly are ours: we dry them in short runs in our Malvern, Pennsylvania kitchen, by freeze drying or air drying, and most have a single ingredient. A new theme and lineup arrives each month. You choose dog or cat, you can name proteins to leave out, and it ships free to the address you enter at checkout. It is a gift that keeps showing up, which is the point and also the thing to understand first.

The renewal, stated early

This is a subscription. The first box is $1, then $50 every month plus taxes, renewing until canceled. The $1 offer needs three paid shipments, and leaving sooner costs a one-time $49. Canceling before the first box is fulfilled is free. The buttons below show the full wording.

Who it suits

• The friend or family member whose dog is the main character of their social feed.
• The new puppy owner who is buying treats every week.
• The person who has everything except a reason to open the mail.
• Households with both a dog and a cat: buy one box per pet.

How the gift works

1. Choose Dog or Cat, and add any proteins the pet should skip.
2. Enter the gift recipient's address as the shipping address at checkout.
3. The first box ships in 1 to 3 business days.
4. A new box follows every month.

You place the order, so you manage the subscription in your account. Subscribers can skip or pause a month, though a skipped month does not count toward the minimum. Pets in the same home get the same lineup, so for two dogs, buy two boxes.

Choosing between a dog and a cat box

Pick the box for the pet who will eat the treats, not the person who opens the package. Dog and cat boxes are separate, and the cat box draws from our fish, shellfish and egg treats. If you do not know a pet's proteins, ask the owner, or leave the skip note blank and let them add to it later by contacting us. If the recipient has a pet with a medical condition or a prescription diet, ask the owner before you order, and let their veterinarian have the final say on treats.

What to tell the person you are gifting

A recurring gift deserves a short heads up. Say the box is a monthly subscription, say the first box was $1 and later boxes are $50 every month plus taxes, and point them to the subscription terms. Because you placed the order, you manage it in your account, so decide whether you will cancel after the minimum or keep it going, and tell them which. Remember the three shipment minimum applies to the $1 offer.

Treat basics for the new recipient

Treats are for intermittent or supplemental feeding. The ASPCA has a plain list of foods pets should not be given, including chocolate and xylitol, which is worth passing on to anyone new to dogs (ASPCA, People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets). A box of dog treats is a good alternative to table scraps.

Holiday timing
