A treat of the month club or a bag at a time?
Updated
A dog treat of the month club is a subscription that sends a new set of treats each month, so the choosing happens for you. Buying bags one at a time keeps every choice in your hands. Which suits you depends on how much variety your dog takes to and how much shopping you want to do.
What is a treat of the month club, exactly?
It is a subscription with treats as the point. Each month a box arrives with a lineup someone else chose, usually around a theme, and the next month brings a different one. Some boxes add toys or other extras alongside the treats. Ours does not. A Modified Monthly box is treats only, and how it works walks through each step from signing up to the box at your door.
The phrase dog treat of the month club is a search habit more than a description. Nobody meets in a hall. What it means in practice is that you have handed the picking to someone who does it every month, and in return you get treats you might not have chosen yourself. That is the whole trade, and the rest of this page is about whether it is a trade you want. If you already know exactly which bag you want every time, the phrase was not written for you, and that is fine.
What changes when someone else picks the treats?
Two things, and they pull in opposite directions. You gain variety and a bit of surprise, since the lineup is built around a theme you did not set. You give up knowing what is in the bag before it arrives. Contents vary by month, and a treat you have never seen can turn up next to one you know well. Both sides are real, and which one weighs more is a question about you rather than about the dog.
Your control is the skip list. You name the proteins to leave out at the start, and that note guides every lineup after it. It does not pick treats by name and it does not change what a label says, so the label on each bag still gets read when the box lands. Here is the comparison laid out plainly:
| Monthly club | Bags one at a time | |
|---|---|---|
| Who chooses | We do, inside your skip list | You do, every time |
| Variety | Changes each month, and favorites return | As much or as little as you buy |
| Effort | Little after the first setup | A decision for every bag |
| Predictability | A theme you learn about when it arrives | A known bag, every time |
How does our box do the choosing?
Every month brings its own theme and lineup, and favorites come back as the assortment changes around them. A favorite that returns comes back inside a different assortment, so a repeat is still a new box. Every treat in a Modified Monthly box is one we make, freeze dried or air dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. They are single ingredient treats, and some are built on a Greek yogurt or cheddar cheese base. You pick dog or cat when you start and name the proteins to skip, and we choose with that note in front of us.
We will not describe a lineup we cannot promise. Contents and quantities change from month to month, the photos on this site are examples, and a treat that is new or not yet released may show up, though none is promised. What stays fixed is the shape of the thing: treats we make, chosen around a theme and inside your skip list. Everything in the box is an extra beside your dog's regular food, meant for intermittent or supplemental feeding and not as a meal.
When does buying bags one at a time make more sense?
More often than a subscription company likes to admit. If your dog has one favorite and turns down the rest, a box of variety becomes a box of toppers, and a known bag is the better call. If your veterinarian has set a treat plan, a bag you can name is easier to keep to than a lineup that changes. And some people simply like choosing. Standing in the aisle reading labels is part of owning a dog for them, the way some owners would rather turn their own wrenches than hand the keys to a shop.
In any of those cases, buy the bag you know. Our treats are sold one bag at a time as well, in the full collection at Sniff and Shift. The box is for the owner who wants the variety and would rather not do the choosing.
Questions
Is a treat of the month club the same as a dog subscription box?
Mostly. A dog subscription box is the broad term, and it can hold toys, treats or both. A treat of the month club is the treats-only version of the same idea, with a lineup chosen for you. Ours is that kind, for dogs or for cats.
Can I still buy single bags of treats if I join a monthly club?
Yes. The box and the single bags are separate things, and one does not lock you out of the other. You can run both, with the box for variety and a known bag of a favorite kept on hand for training.
Do I get to choose the treats in a treat of the month club?
Not by name. In ours you choose dog or cat and name the proteins to leave out, and that note shapes what we pick. The month's theme and lineup are ours to decide. If you need to choose every treat yourself, single bags are the better fit.
What if a month's treats do not suit my dog?
Offer each new treat as a small piece, give it a second chance later in the week, and crumble the ones that still miss over dinner as a topper. Then update your skip list by getting in touch and naming the pet. The guide to a subscription box for picky dogs goes through this step by step.
Is there a treat of the month club for cats?
Yes. You pick dog or cat when you start a Modified Monthly box. The cat box follows the same pattern as the dog box: our own treats around a monthly theme, with your note for the proteins to leave out. A home with both animals orders one box per pet.
Does a treat of the month club make a good gift?
It can, and it suits the dog owner who likes a surprise more than a known bag. We can send it to their address rather than yours. Say plainly when you give it that it is a subscription and keeps arriving, so nobody is caught off guard.
