How to write and update your dog's skip list
Updated
A dog treat skip list is the short note that tells us which proteins to leave out of your dog's box. Write it when you order, keep it to proteins rather than treat names, and contact us any time it needs to change, saying which pet the change is for.
What belongs on a skip list?
Proteins, named plainly. If your dog does not get chicken, write chicken. If beef is out, write beef. The list is a set of ingredients to steer around, so a short line in your own words is all it needs.
Treat names do not belong on it. Every month brings a new theme and a new lineup, and while favorites return, the assortment changes. A treat you name today may not be in next month's box, so a note about it would have nothing to attach to. A protein is the thing that carries from one month to the next.
Some of our treats have a Greek yogurt or cheddar cheese base instead of a meat one. If you want those out, put them on the list in plain words and ask us about it. We will not promise that every one can always be left out.
Keep it honest and short. A list with three entries you mean beats a list with twelve you guessed at.
Where do you add the list when you order?
On the order form, in the optional note that asks what your pet should skip. Tell us there when you place the order, and it travels with the box. You choose Dog or Cat on the same form, and each pet gets its own box, so the note belongs to the pet whose box you are ordering. The dog box page shows the form and what the box holds.
You do not need the list to be complete on day one. Write what you know today. A dog you have had for years can fill the note in a minute, and a dog who is still working out its tastes can start with one or two lines.
How do you change the list later?
Contact us. That works any time, with no waiting for a particular month. Tell us the proteins to add or remove and which pet the change is for, and we update it from there.
One change per message keeps things clear, especially in a home with more than one pet. "Please add lamb to Biscuit's skips" is a complete message. The longer story about why is welcome, but it is not required.
The how it works page covers the rest of the monthly routine, including how the other pieces of an account fit around this one.
How do you decide a protein should go on the list?
Most of the time it is plain preference. You know your dog does not care for fish, or you would rather skip beef for your own reasons, and the list is where that goes.
Sometimes it comes from watching. A treat your dog keeps walking away from tells you something, and a protein that never gets taken is a fine candidate for the list. Note the protein, not the day.
And sometimes it comes from a special diet. If your veterinarian has set one, follow it, and ask what that means for treats. We do not give feeding advice, and the list is not a way to build a diet. It only tells us what to leave out.
The treats themselves are for intermittent or supplemental feeding, so they sit beside your dog's meals. The list narrows what arrives, and the portion on the dish is still up to you.
If you are ready to write yours, the Modified Monthly page is where the order starts.
What can a skip list not do?
It cannot pick treats by name. You will not be able to write "send the red bag" and have it arrive, since the lineup is new each month and we do not promise any particular treat.
It cannot promise a particular result either. It tells us what to leave out, and that is the whole job.
And it is not feeding advice. We do not give any, and the list only marks what to leave out. Photos on our pages are examples and contents vary by month, so the list is the part you control: a line drawn around the lineup. A good one is short, and it stays in step with your dog.
Questions
Can I skip chicken in a dog treat box?
Yes. Name chicken on your list when you order, or contact us later to add it. If you are sorting through labels as well, our chicken free dog treats guide covers reading them, which is a separate job from the box.
Can I pick treats instead of skipping proteins?
No. The lineup is new every month, so there is no fixed set of treats to choose from. What you control is the list of proteins to leave out, and that carries from one month to the next.
How do I change my dog's skip list?
Contact us at any time, tell us which proteins to add or remove, and name the pet the change is for. There is no month you have to wait for, and one change per message keeps it clear.
What if my two dogs need different skips?
Each pet gets its own box, and dogs in one home share a lineup. Contact us before you order and we can explain how that works for your home. Please do not guess at a workaround on your own.
Can a skip list cover cheese or yogurt treats?
Some of our treats have a Greek yogurt or cheddar cheese base. List them in plain words and ask us. We cannot promise that every one can always be left out, but we would rather hear it up front.
Is a skip list the same as a special diet?
No. A skip list only tells us what to leave out of the box. A special diet comes from the person who set that diet, and any question about how treats fit into it goes to them.
