Gift ideas for dog people that actually get used
Updated
A good gift for dog lovers is something they will reach for every day. That means gear for the walk, a keepsake of their own dog, or something the dog gets to enjoy, such as treats picked around what it likes and what it should skip. One test: will it get used this week, or will it need a shelf?
What makes a gift useful to someone with a dog?
Dog people already own a lot of dog things. The leash by the door works. The bowl is fine. What they run short of is the stuff that wears out or walks off. Think of a treat pouch with a clasp that still closes, a towel that lives by the back door, or a hook that holds a wet leash.
The most useful gift for dog lovers respects the routine. A dog owner walks at the same hour most days, in whatever weather shows up. A headlamp for the dark months fits that pattern, and so does a pair of gloves with grip. Neither needs explaining, and neither ends up in a closet.
Which gifts are for the dog, and which are for the owner?
Decide early who the present is for. A gift for the dog gets chewed, carried or eaten, and the owner enjoys it secondhand. A gift for the owner is something they notice every day. Both are fine, as long as you know which one you are buying.
| For the dog | For the owner |
|---|---|
| A tug toy or a ball that floats | A pouch or jar for treats |
| A bed that fits where the dog already sleeps | A towel or mat for the door |
| Treats picked around what it likes and skips | A print or photo of their dog |
| A long line for a quiet field | Gloves and a light for dark walks |
If the dog has a known skip list, ask before buying anything edible. The owner knows which proteins are off the table, and a bag of the wrong one goes straight in the trash.
Which keepsakes mean the most to a dog owner?
The keepsake that lands is always about their own dog, not dogs in general. A framed photo of the dog doing its usual thing beats any generic print. A portrait made from a photo you already have gets hung on a wall and stays there. A paw print, pressed in clay or inked on card, costs little and is oddly moving. An engraved tag with the dog's name does a job and looks like a gift at the same time.
If the owner is also a car person, the garage is its own gift category, and we wrote a separate guide to gifts for car lovers with dogs.
How does a box of treats work as a gift?
A monthly box of treats is a gift the dog gets and the owner opens. Ours is Modified Monthly: treats we make ourselves, freeze dried or air dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, with a new lineup each month. You choose dog or cat and you can list proteins the dog should skip, so the box fits a dog you know a little about.
Two things to say plainly. First, you can put the recipient's address in the shipping field, so the box goes to their door and not yours. Second, it is a subscription, and the terms sit next to the button before you pay. If you want the longer version, the dog gift box page walks through a gift order, and the Modified Monthly page has the details on the box. Treats are meant for intermittent or supplemental feeding, so a box adds to a dog's meals rather than standing in for them.
How do you choose for a dog you have never met?
Ask the owner two questions. What does the dog go wild for, and what should it skip? Most owners answer both in a sentence, and the answers tell you more than any gift list. If the household has a cat instead, or as well, ask the same two things about the cat; the box comes in a dog version and a cat version.
If the pet is on a special diet, let the owner ask their veterinarian before you buy anything edible. In that case a keepsake is the easier gift, and nobody has to read a label.
Questions
What is a good gift for someone who just got a dog?
Something that solves a problem they have met this week. A hook for the leash, a jar with a lid the dog cannot open, or a pouch for treats on walks. New owners buy these things anyway, usually in a rush, so a gift that saves them the errand gets noticed.
What do you buy a dog lover who already has everything?
Buy for the dog they have, not for dogs in general. A portrait or a framed photo of their own dog is the one thing no store stocks. If you would rather give something they use up, a box of treats arrives new each month, and you can name the proteins the dog should skip when you order.
Can the treat box ship straight to the person I am gifting?
Yes. Put their address in the shipping field when you check out, and the box is delivered to them instead of to you. It helps to tell them a box is coming, since an unexpected package of treats raises questions at the door.
Is a monthly treat box a one-time present?
No. Modified Monthly is a subscription that renews until canceled. The full terms are next to the button before you pay and on the subscription terms page. Read them first, and tell the recipient plainly that more boxes will follow the first one.
What should I ask before buying treats for someone else's dog?
Ask what the dog likes and what it should skip, including any protein the owner already keeps out of the house. Ask what size the dog is, since a tiny dog and a big one get the same treat in very different amounts. Then ask where treats fit at their house, because some owners keep them for training only.
Is there a gift for a home with a cat as well as a dog?
Yes. The box comes as a dog box or a cat box, and you pick one when you order. For a home with both, each pet gets its own box, since the lineup is chosen for one kind of animal. Ask the owner which proteins each pet skips, and name them for each order.
