New cat gifts
Helping a friend set up the house for a new cat
Updated
The most useful gifts for new cat owners cover the setup they forget: a second litter scoop, a carrier, a scratching post, a covered bed to hide in. Leave food and litter to them. Once the cat is home and they know what it skips, send a cat treat box to their address.
What does a new cat need in the first days home?
A friend who has just brought a cat home has usually bought the big things and missed the small ones. They have a litter box, and maybe no spare scoop. They have a bag of food, and one bowl. If you are not sure what is missing, these are the usual gaps:
- A second litter scoop, so there is one clean and one in use
- A carrier, since the trip home is not the last trip
- A scratching post, placed where the cat already spends time
- A covered bed or a plain cardboard box to hide in
- A pair of bowls, one for food and one for water
We have no brand to recommend, and no claim about what any item does for the cat. These are things a household needs, and the new owner can get them in any shop. What you are really doing is checking the list so they do not have to make a late-night run.
Ask a mutual friend what has already arrived, so you do not send a duplicate.
Which gifts are better left to the new owner?
Food and litter. Both are personal, and they are the first things a new owner works out. The shelter, the breeder or the previous owner may have given them a plan already, and a bag you pick could clash with it.
The same goes for anything the cat has to wear or swallow. If you cannot say what the cat likes, you are guessing, and a guess that does not fit goes in a closet. In the first few days, gifts for the house are an easier call than gifts for the cat.
The simple rule is to buy the equipment and leave the menu alone. Once they know what the cat likes, that is the time to think about treats.
When does a cat treat box make sense?
After the cat is home and the owner knows what it turns down. Food stays their call. Anything from our box counts as intermittent or supplemental feeding, next to whatever meals the owner picks. Treats are also easier to pick once there is a pattern to go on, and waiting a few weeks costs nothing.
The box is Modified Monthly, and the Cat choice is the one to pick. We make each single ingredient treat ourselves in Malvern, Pennsylvania, freeze dried or air dried in small batches. Themes and lineups change monthly, and what you see in photos is a sample, not a promise. For more on how the cat side works, read the cat box page, and see freeze dried cat treats for what that means in a bag.
Timing first: once the cat is home, order with their address in the shipping step, anywhere in the US. Pick Cat and list what it skips if you know; after that, contact us whenever the list changes. Tell them plainly that it is a subscription. How it renews is set out in the terms beside the start button. The Modified Monthly page has the rest.
How do you drop off a gift for a new cat?
Keep the visit short. A new household is busy enough. Hand the gift over at the door, or leave it there with a text, and let them open it when they have a free minute.
Skip the long catch-up unless they invite you in. These are house manners and nothing more. If they want company, let them be the one to ask.
A short handwritten note on your gift bag, something like "for the cat's first week," tells them the present is for the house and not an assignment.

Questions
What do you give someone who just adopted a cat?
Give equipment for the first days: a second litter scoop, a carrier, a scratching post, a bed to hide in, two bowls. Leave food and litter alone. A treat box can come later, once they know what the cat skips and have settled into a routine.
Should I buy cat food as a gift?
It is better left to them. The shelter or the previous owner may have set a plan, and new owners often want to choose for themselves. A food gift is easy to get wrong. A bed or a bowl cannot clash with anything.
Can a cat treat box go to their address?
Yes. Put their US address in the shipping step, choose Cat, and add any proteins you know it skips. After that, contact us any time, naming the cat, to change that list.
Can the gift be for a kitten?
We do not give feeding advice, and we cannot say what suits a kitten. Ask your veterinarian before you give treats to a young kitten. Setup gifts like a carrier, a bed and bowls are easier to choose and need no such question.
What if they also have a dog?
Every pet gets a box of its own, so a dog in the house would need a Dog box. That is a separate choice, made on its own, and the Cat box stays the cat's.
Is it too soon to send treats in the first week?
That is our opinion, and it is yes. Wait until they know what the cat skips. A first week is busy enough, and a box can ship any time after that. A box also lands better once they have a feel for the cat's habits.
