New dog gift
What to give someone who just brought a dog home
Updated
Useful gifts for new dog owners are the everyday things they forget to buy: a spare leash for the car, a towel for wet paws, a lint roller, waste bags and treats. A monthly treat box covers the last one and ships to their US address, with a new lineup each month.
What do new dog owners run out of first?
The big purchases get made before the dog arrives. The bed, the bowls and the crate are sorted, usually in one long afternoon at the pet store. What gets missed is the small stuff that disappears fast.
Waste bags go first. Then the towel, because nobody planned for how many wet paws one rainy week produces. Treats are close behind, since a new dog is learning a dozen things a day and the owner is handing out rewards all day. A gift that refills one of these gets noticed in the first week.
Which everyday gifts get used from the first week?
Aim for things that live by the door or in the car. Anything that needs a place on a shelf will wait in its wrapping. For more ideas that suit a dog lover in general, our dog gift box page has a wider spread. For a household that only just started, this short list does the job:
- A spare leash that stays in the car
- A stack of old but clean towels, kept by the back door
- A lint roller for the couch and the driver's seat
- A roll or two of waste bags, clipped where the leash hangs
- A small jar with a lid, so treats have a home
Nothing on that list needs a size, a brand or a fitting. That matters when you do not know the dog yet.
What should you leave for the new owner to choose?
Some things are not yours to pick. Food is the first, because what goes in the bowl is the owner's call. The same goes for the crate, the bed size and anything that touches training. A wrong guess here costs the owner a return trip, and it can read as a comment on how they are doing.
Stick to gifts that do not depend on the dog. A new owner is also meeting a lot of advice from relatives. A present that adds no opinion is a quiet relief.
How does a treat box work as a new dog gift?
Modified Monthly is a monthly box of our own single ingredient treats, with a new theme and lineup each month. Favorites return, but the assortment changes. You choose dog or cat, and a box can ship to a US address other than yours, so it lands at the new owner's door.
Here is the part that suits a new dog. The owner may not know yet which proteins their dog should skip. Name any they already know when you order. As the list grows, the owner can contact us with the pet's name and the change. The box is for intermittent or supplemental feeding: extras for the new dog, never its dinner. If you are curious what the first weeks of treats can look like, we wrote about treats for a newly adopted dog. You will find the full box description on the Modified Monthly page.
Before you order, tell the owner a box is on the way. It is a subscription, and the terms show beside the button, so they should hear about it from you first. For more gift ideas, browse the guides page.
Questions
What do you get someone who just adopted a dog?
Start with what runs out: waste bags, towels and a spare leash for the car. If you want something with more staying power, a treat box gives the dog something new each month. Avoid food, beds and crates, which depend on the dog and the owner's plans.
Can I send a treat box before they know what their dog eats?
Yes. Tell us any proteins you already know to leave out, or leave the list empty. The owner can contact us at any time to change the proteins, and they should name the pet when they do. We do not give feeding advice, so questions about a special diet go to their veterinarian.
Can the gift ship to their address instead of mine?
Yes. A box can ship to a US address other than the buyer's. Enter their address at checkout, and mention it to them so the package does not surprise anyone at the door.
What if the new dog lives with a cat?
Each pet gets its own box, and you pick dog or cat when you order. A home with both can have a dog box and a cat box. Pets of the same kind in one home get the same lineup, so two dogs would share one.
What if the new dog is a puppy?
We have a separate guide to treat boxes for puppies, and you can find it through our guides page. The puppy owner and their vet decide what treats suit a young dog. For a gift, the everyday list above works well, since towels and waste bags are useful at any age.
What should I write in the card?
Say a box is coming each month, and that they can tell us which proteins to skip. Keep it light. Something like "this one is for the dog, and there will be a new one next month" says everything the owner needs to hear.
