A new-home present that the dog gets to open too

Updated

A good housewarming gift for dog owners adds nothing to the unpacking: a monthly treat box sent straight to their new address gets used up instead of stored. You pick dog or cat, name any proteins to skip, and the box goes to the new place, not to yours.

Why does a gift that gets used up suit people who just moved?

Because the new place is already full of boxes. A candle needs a shelf, a frame needs a nail, and a throw pillow needs a decision about the couch. Treats need none of that. They are eaten, and the space they took up goes back to the owner.

The box also does something a single present cannot. It arrives at the new address on its own, month after month, with a new theme and a new lineup each time. Favorites return, but the assortment changes, so one month's box is not a copy of the last. For someone still hunting for the kitchen scissors, a delivery that needs no setup is a small relief.

You can send it to a US address other than your own, so you can start it from wherever you are. If you want the full rundown of who the box suits, the dog gift box page has it.

What do you need to know before sending it to a new address?

Three details, and one of them is easy to get wrong. The first is the confirmed new address. People who have just moved sometimes mean the old one out of habit, or the place they are not in yet, so ask for the one where packages will actually be received. The second is whether the pet is a dog or a cat. The third is any proteins the pet skips.

Proteins to leave out go in the order note, and a message to us later can change them. Ask the owner, or ask someone close to them if you want to keep it a surprise. We do not give feeding advice, so the owner is the right person to ask.

Our treats are our own single ingredient treats, freeze dried or air dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Some use Greek yogurt or cheddar cheese as the base. Contents change by month and the photos are examples, so treat the box page as a sample, not a promise of any one month. They are for intermittent or supplemental feeding, which means beside meals, not in place of them.

How do you tell them a box is headed to the new place?

Say so yourself. A text the week of the move works, and so does a card left at the door. Do not count on a gift message inside the box; put your own words wherever you like.

Be specific that it is a monthly box, not a one-off package, because a second delivery next month is a surprise only if nobody mentioned it. The Modified Monthly page is a good link to send along with the text.

Who is the box for?
  • Treats from our Malvern, PA kitchen
  • Free shipping on every box
  • Subscription checkout on sniffandshift.com (Shopify)

What else is handy on move-in day?

A few small things, none of which cost much and all of which get used right away:

  • A spare leash hung by the new door, since the old one is buried in a box somewhere.
  • A tag with the new address. If they have just moved, remind them to update the tag.
  • A towel by the entry for wet paws.
  • The old bed, unpacked first instead of last.

That is the whole list. Bring one thing or all four, and the treat box does the rest of the work for the months that follow.

Questions

Can I send a treat box to someone's new address?

Yes. A box can ship to a US address other than yours. Enter their new address when you order, and make sure it is the one that can receive packages now, not the one they just left.

What if they have a cat as well as a dog?

There is one box per pet, with a Dog choice and a Cat choice. If the household has both, you can send one of each. Our page on a dog and cat subscription box explains how that works in one home.

Is a treat box a good closing gift from a real estate agent?

It can be, with one thing to know: it is a subscription, not a single box, and the terms show beside the start button. Ask the buyers about proteins to skip before you start it, and be clear that it renews.

What if I do not know which proteins their dog skips?

Ask them, or ask someone close to them. Whatever goes in the order note is not final. The owner can contact us later to change it, so the first guess does not have to be exact.

Should I wait until they have moved in?

Start it once the new address can receive packages. Pick a time that fits their move, and use their confirmed address. We do not give shipping times here, so the simple plan is to start it once they are in.

Does the box keep coming after the first month?

It does. A subscription means a box every month, and the terms beside the start button cover renewals. Read them before you begin, and let the recipient know it is a monthly box.
